The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) is a federal law enacted in 1996. The goal of HIPAA is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the national healthcare delivery system by putting standards in place to manage the exchange of electronic, administrative and financial data. It is also designed to safeguard the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI).
The HIPAA Privacy Rule
The HIPAA Privacy Rule puts standards in place to safeguard medical records and other PHI. The Privacy Rule applies to health plans, healthcare clearinghouses, and any healthcare provider that participates in the electronic transmission of healthcare transactions. The Privacy Rule calls for the appropriate protection of PHI and establishes limits and restrictions regarding utilization and disclosures that may be made of this information without specific patient authorization. The Privacy Rule also grants patient rights over their health information. This includes rights to review their health records and to request corrections where necessary.
HIPAA Privacy Rule Training Requirements
Because HIPAA applies to many different types of healthcare organizations, HIPAA training requirements are often described as “flexible”. Training is, however, an Administrative Requirement of the HIPAA Privacy Rule and should be provided “as necessary and appropriate for members of the workforce to carry out their functions”. HIPAA training best practices suggest that training content and programs be as relevant as possible to the employee’s role.
eLearning for HIPAA Privacy Rule Training
In recent years, as SaaS-based technologies have continued to evolve, eLearning has emerged as a cornerstone for all aspects of healthcare training initiatives, including HIPAA Privacy Rule training. eLearning supports (or eliminates) the need for classroom-based training by offering your employees a convenient and cost-effect way to conduct their HIPAA training activities.
With eLearning, your employees can complete their training courses at a time and place that is convenient for them and at a pace that works best for their learning style. And eLearning eliminates many of the costs associated with in-person, classroom-based training, such as travel, catering and venue fees, and the printing and distribution of learning materials.
